The Art of Iconography

The art of Iconography

I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to study the art of Iconography from the monks at Mount Athos – the monastic community in northern Greece. Working in the Byzantine style and the traditional medium of egg tempera, powder pigments and 22K gold leaf, these hand-painted Icons are the sanctified art of the Orthodox Christian Church.

Our Unique Iconography Process

The process of preparing the wooden panels or support, on which the Icons are painted, is an art in itself. The surface is sanded and a sheet of linen, using rabbit skin glue, is adhered to the panel. This is done to compensate for any warping or cracking the wood may experience due to moisture or atmospheric change. Several coats of chalk gesso, again, using rabbit skin glue as a binder, is applied and allowed to thoroughly dry over night. It is then smoothed using a moist rag and the gold leaf is applied using size. It is now ready to be painted.

Unique Orthodox Christian Icons

These custom-made, hand-painted Icons are exact reproductions of Byzantine masterpieces and make a great gift – especially during Christmas and Easter!
